A Clinical Study on Elderly Psychiatric Inpatients


Abstract
the objective of this study was to find out the clinical aspect of the elderly psychiatric inpatients.
The author made a clinical study of 164 elderly inpatients who had been treated in the psychiatric department of Seoul Red Cross hospital during the past 5 years from Jan. 1988 to Dec. 1992.
From the analysis of the psychiatric records of the patients, the following results were obtained.
1) The elderly patients occupied 9.9% of all psychiatric inpatients.
2) the number of female patients were larger than male patients in the ratio of 2.3:1.
3) Among the clinical diagnosis, neurotic disorders were the most common.
4) The most common process of hospitalization was through the outpatient department.
5) Clinical symptoms of neurotic disorders revealed that depression was the most common symptom followed by somatic symptom and insomnia.
Those of psychotic disorders revealed that insomnia was the most common symptom followed by somatic symptoms and delusion.
Among organic mental disorders, disorientation, somatic symptoms and cognitive disturbance were common.
